The Backstory:

The 1925 Tour de France was the 19th edition of the Tour de France. It was over 5,440 km in 18 stages.

Stage 12 ran from Toulon to Nice - a total of 280 km. The Italian Ottavio Bottecchia was helped by his Belgian teammate Lucien Buysse in the previous stages. In return, Bottecchia allowed Buysse to win the 11th and 12th stage. However, in the 12th stage, Bottecchia and Buysse failed to sign in at a control post, and were fined with 10 minutes penalty time. Nevertheless, the Buysse won this tough mountain stage

At the end, The Italian Ottavio Bottecchia successfully defended his 1924 victory to win his second consecutive Tour. Of the original 130 cyclists, only 49 made it to the finish.

These numbers tell the story of how tough this race was back then.

Look at the equipment and dusty faces of the heros everyone was watching 1925.
